McGee

From the beginning, the Bible, the Church and the Family were the most important influences in the Black Community. No matter where you lived in this country, Blacks always shared the same values for survival and lifestyles. Your Mother, Father, Grandmother, Grandfather, probably came from the southern part of the United States. Ask them about it.

This Compact Disk will give those that listen to it knowledge, flashbacks and/or warm and fuzzy feelings. This is a reflection of those unique days shared by many.

Not all children of color are raised by both biological parents, but I was very fortunate. Maybe back in the 1950's and 1960's, in a small mid-western town, that focus and odds increased. Today it seems totally the opposite.

Way back then, with very little formal education themselves, my parents were highly motivated and determined to educate, raise us up and prepare us to take advantage of the best this old world had to offer in an honest and successful manner. And if that process required strict disciplinary action, then so be it!

Born first generation, "Country-South-Up-North", my parents brought with them all of the southern values and passed them on to their children. From scrubbing floors on their hands and knees to hard physical labor, they sacrificed their pleasure for their children's future.

These are a few of those songs, values and episodes from that life. Listen to 2 Songs >>

Pennington McGee left Alton, Illinois; a small mid-western town, to go away for the first time, on a scholarship to an Art school, Columbus College of Art and Design, in Columbus, Ohio. He had never spent one night sleeping over at anyone's house without the immediate family. Homesick-as-a-dog, he focused upon his art and new found friends. With an “A- grade average” at The Columbus College of Art & Design, he then transferred to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he received a Bachelors Degree of Fine Art. His love for music and the arts provided a springboard for his success.

Always feeling close to the roots from whence he came, Pennington never forgot his upbringing despite his naive creative quest and wanderlust activities. That foundation helped balance all of his pursuits. His parents always encouraged him to seek creative expression. Little did they know that wish was always on his “plate of fulfillment”. Looking back now, he shakily realized someone or ones have been praying for him.

He has performed in England, Switzerland, Germany, Scotland, New York, Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, Washington, D.C., among other places. He has done voice-over and singing commercials. Singing and playing percussion with individuals and orchestras. His art has been exhibited in museums, galleries and with private collections. All that he is and all that he is not is attributed to the Lord. If you have never lived this life before, you can be that fly on the wall and become a part of this period. No “drive-bys”, no car alarms, no “back talk” without serious repercussions.
